What is the Abortion Pill?
Are you considering the option of abortion as you face an unplanned pregnancy? Referred to as ‘the abortion pill,’ medical abortion is a serious medical procedure that terminates an existing pregnancy using two different drugs.
If you are considering abortion as a pregnancy decision, you deserve to know the facts and the risks involved. We are here to better inform you so you can make a confident decision.
A Two-Step Process
Mifepristone and misoprostol are two abortion drugs that work together in the abortion pill process.
Mifepristone blocks the womb from absorbing progesterone – the pregnancy hormone needed to keep an embryo implanted and growing. By thinning the uterine walls, this drug works to end the pregnancy.Â
Next, misoprostol is taken about 24 hours later, which causes the uterus to go into birth-like contractions, expelling the pregnancy through the vagina. A follow-up with a doctor or medical professional is needed to ensure the abortion was complete.
Before an Abortion
There are two important steps to help safeguard your health before an abortion. First, receive a medical-grade pregnancy test at our center. If you think you might be pregnant, call us at (859) 744-5688 to schedule your appointment. Same-day appointments are available.
If your pregnancy test at our center is positive, your next step is a limited ultrasound. A pregnancy test cannot reveal all there is to know about a pregnancy.Â
An ultrasound will confirm whether you have a viable pregnancy, how far along you are, the location of your pregnancy, and whether you have any potential pregnancy complications. We offer free limited ultrasound services as well.
