What About Making An Adoption Plan?
Like your other options for your unplanned pregnancy, adoption is not an easy decision to make. It is, however, a brave and selfless act. You don’t choose to make an adoption plan because you don’t care about or love your child. You choose adoption because you know it’s best for your child.
The Adoption Process
Almost everyone knows someone who was adopted, has adopted a child, or placed a child for adoption. The process takes time, but you shouldn’t make a decision as important as this quickly.
To begin the process, locate a reputable adoption specialist. The agency or specialist you choose should never charge you for their services. They should provide you with an explanation of the legal process for your state and answer all of your questions.
The adoption representative will ask you about your expectations, the type of family you’re looking for, and the type of relationship you’d like after your child’s placement. You have the freedom to change your mind at any time up until you sign papers to end your parental rights.
Different Adoption Plans
There are three basic adoption plans. The amount of post-adoption contact you wish to have with your child and their adoptive family determines the best plan.
Open Adoption
This plan gives you the most contact with your child. Together, you and the adoptive couple exchange identifying information such as full names, phone numbers, and addresses. You agree on the amount of interaction you’re most comfortable with ahead of time.
Closed Adoption
If you are more comfortable remaining completely anonymous, choose a closed adoption. This plan means you would have no contact with your child and their adoptive parents after placement.
Semi-Open Adoption
A semi-open adoption allows for contact with your child and their adoptive family, but you also maintain your privacy. Communication by email or letter is done through the adoption specialist you choose. Your adoption specialist can also arrange face-to-face meetings.
