Abortion: Side Effects and Risks

There are two types of abortion: medical abortion and surgical abortion. The procedure you would have depends on several factors, including how far along you are.

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion uses drugs to end a pregnancy. The FDA recommends that abortion drugs not be taken past ten weeks gestation.

When you take abortion drugs, you’ll experience abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding. Other side effects can occur, which include:

  • Vomiting
  • Upset stomach
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Chills

Some women experience a risk following this procedure. These risks can include:

  • Incomplete abortion (this happens when some of the pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus, which may require surgical treatment to resolve)
  • An ongoing pregnancy (if the drugs don’t work)
  • Fever
  • Infection
  • Heavy, prolonged bleeding
  • Digestive symptoms (i.e., upset stomach)

You should also seek medical attention if you experience a fast heart rate, bad stomach pain, or other signs of something wrong.

Surgical Abortion

A surgical abortion uses drugs, suctioning, and/or surgical tools to end a pregnancy. The further along you are, the longer and more involved the procedure may be.

After a surgical abortion, you may experience mild cramping and light spotting or bleeding for a few days. However, the risks can be severe and include:

  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall (this can cause infertility and painful periods)
  • Perforated uterus (this happens when a surgical tool pokes a hole in the uterus)
  • Infection
  • Damage to the cervix

You may not notice signs of a complication immediately, so it is essential to pay attention to your body and notice symptoms like a fever or cramps lasting more than 48 hours.
