Know the Facts

First, it’s essential to understand how pregnancy tests work.

Both blood- and urine-based pregnancy tests measure a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone is produced after the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining, and the placenta begins forming.

Since hCG doubles every 2 to 3 days during early pregnancy, it is recommended to take a pregnancy test after the first day of a missed period.

Additionally, taking the test first thing in the morning (when your urine is most concentrated) can improve your chances of receiving an accurate result.

If you receive a negative result but still suspect you’re pregnant, wait a few days and take another test. It may be that hCG in your body hasn’t yet increased to detectable levels. Additionally, women with irregular periods should wait at least 21 days after sexual intercourse to test for pregnancy.

We know that waiting can be the hardest part. If you receive a positive result, we’re here to answer your questions and discuss your next steps.
