Both blood- and urine-based pregnancy tests measure a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone is produced after the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining, and the placenta begins forming.
Since hCG doubles every 2 to 3 days during early pregnancy, it is recommended to take a pregnancy test after the first day of a missed period.
Additionally, taking the test first thing in the morning (when your urine is most concentrated) can improve your chances of receiving an accurate result.
